Week of January 26, 2012

One of the earmarks of true discipleship is loving others.  Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (Jn. 11:35)  Thus one of our goals as a church is to become a church that is deepening relationships and growing our love for each other.

Father God will help us in this process.  He so wants to teach us to love as He loves that He will work with us.  The starting place is to realize that we can’t love the way He desires and He demands.  Only He can love (agape) the way He does.  If I will express Agape to others, I must learn to allow Him to do so through me.  I am only the conduit, channeling His love to others.  That’s good news.  He is the source, I am only the delivery method for His love.

One thing Father God will do is bring people into our lives who are challenging to love.  Anyone can love loveable folks, even the lost can do that.  It is when I am challenged by someone who isn’t “like” me, or someone who is difficult to like, much less to love, that I will be stretched in my expressing of love.

So get ready for Love 101.  Don’t be surprised as Father God begins to bring some interesting folks to us.  He’s testing our willingness to be His body in the world.
